Today we’d like to introduce you to Debra Raney.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I was out shopping after the birth of my grandson, Ashton, and was shocked to find slim pickings for products geared to children of color. Ashton inspired me to be the change that I wanted to see and sparked the creation of Little Muffincakes.
Little Muffincakes is a character-based baby boutique that seeks to present high quality merchandise in the Marketplace that reflect the diversity of beauty in children. Representation matters and we seek to provide the building blocks necessary for self-acceptance to promote high self-esteem in black and brown children from birth. Little Muffincakes is filling voids by providing blankets, bibs, apparel, wrapping paper and other products with relatable imagery.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
My struggle has been balancing building a business with working full-time. It’s difficult trying to carve out the time to master product development, marketing, social media, and brand awareness. It was a labor of love as I worked long nights for ten months planning my launch for 8/5/17. The process was hard, but it taught me patience and that with determination my “dream” was possible.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Little Muffincakes Baby Boutique story. Tell us more about the business.
We are a character-based baby boutique that launched 8/5/2017 to present high quality merchandise in the Marketplace that reflect the diversity of beauty in children. Representation matters and we seek to provide the building blocks necessary for self-acceptance to promote high self-esteem in black and brown children from birth. Little Muffincakes is filling voids by providing blankets, bibs, apparel, wrapping paper and other products with relatable imagery.
I am most proud of the responses that I receive from customers. They are blown away to find a brand that caters to their babies specifically. The outpouring of love has been a saving grace on those hard days.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I have been lucky enough to find a team of artists and manufacturers that have been instrumental in helping me develop my product lines. It is always so awesome when someone can bring your ideas and visions to life.
